There are 2,325 billionaires across the world, reveals Wealth-X and UBS’s 2014 Billionaire Census, which is the highest number to date.

The growth of the world economy between July 2013 and June 2014, whereby the global equity index rose by 20.4 per cent and the world’s GDP reached $77 trillion, contributed to a 7.1 per cent increase in the number of billionaires – individuals with a net worth of $1 billion or above – when compared with 0.5 per cent last year, the report adds.

“The Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census 2014 underscores Wealth-X’s commitment to conducting groundbreaking research on the world’s ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) population,” says Mykolas Rambus, CEO of Wealth-X, in a press statement.

Billionaires’ combined wealth increased by 12 per cent to $7.3 trillion in 2014, the Billionaire Census states, making up four per cent of the world’s overall wealth. “Billionaires increased their liquid holdings last year and entrepreneurialism is a [major] key to their wealth,” adds Simon Smiles, CIO of UHNW at UBS Wealth Management, in a press release.

Europe ranks number one for housing the highest number of billionaires, at 775, followed by North America (609), Asia (560), the Middle East (154), Latin American and The Caribbean (153), Africa (40) and the Pacific (34).

Although most of the aforementioned regions experienced an increase in billionaire numbers and their total wealth, the Middle East and Africa experienced a decline, “primarily due to volatile socio-political conditions”.

Meanwhile, the global billionaire population is predicted to surpass 3,800 by 2020, the report claims, due to an anticipated increase in innovation in the tech industry and the number of entrepreneurs that are expected to fuel its growth.
